All In the Handshake
As I was leaving the Pentagon City station during my commute home today, I was startled when someone walked up to me cheerfully and shook my hand. He was an older guy, and I vaguely recognized him from somewhere. Turned out, he was none other than Harris Miller, the former tech lobbyist running for the United States Senate! So stunned was I by the surprise encounter, that I watched in a daze as he made his quick introduction and a volunteer handed me some fliers.
And then I spent five minutes thinking about the Senate race and then called a coworker to let her know what just happened.
So it turns out handshakes can be useful in politics.
Just thought I’d let you know.
Glad to see Miller outsourced the distribution of fliers. Webb will take him down, we’ll see in nearly 24 hours!
So the fact that he fought to outsource US Jobs, the fact that he gave money to the GOP, the fact that he supported the war and President Bush’s tax cuts, the fact that his opponent is a better candidate and a better man, the fact that his opponent has the endorsement of Senator John Kerry, and the fact that his opponent can win, None of that matters because you shook Miller’s hand?
If you notice, I didn’t actually say I plan to vote for Miller – or whether I even have my voter registration in Virginia or in my home state of Florida.
I just said that handshakes are actually useful, based on my experience yesterday, because they get the person thinking about politics, even for a moment.
