An SG Tries “Nationalizing” Sustainability Efforts

As Republicans in Florida and DC whine about the “nationalization” of the financial services sector, the Student Government at UF is trying to defund a grassroots advocacy group just so it can create a new bureaucracy doing the exact same thing – lobbying for a greener earth.

Now, would the folks of the Black Student Union take kindly to BSU being defunded and replaced with an African American Affairs Cabinet?

Sometimes, the government does need to step in and do something the broader public isn’t. And sometimes they need to provide the kind of resources needed for an existing group to expand. But it is almost never a good idea to replace a successful group lead by democratically elected leaders with a government bureaucracy stacked with political appointees.

SG is trying to take an inefficient branch of its structure (when has the Cabinet ever delivered anything on par to what the larger student groups and umbrella organizations are already doing?) – and is trying to use it to claim they can defund whatever group comes along.

This takes the term “insourcing” and turns it on its head. It’s a naked power and prestige grab and should right opposed.
