Justice Alito, 58-42
Samuel Alito is the now the second convservative white male in a row to be placed on the Supreme Court by President Bush, despite the President’s earlier protestations of favoring diversity and matters like respecting the Constitution.
Alito was confirmed by the most partisan vote for the Supreme Court in modern history. The 58-42 tally in favor of confirmation including 54 Republicans and just 4 Democrats voting to confirm, with 41 Democrats and 1 Republican voting to reject the nominee.
(The 4 Democrats were Conrad of North Dakota, Johnson of South Dakota, Nelson of Nebraska, and Byrd of West Virginia. The lone Republican was Chafee of Rhode Island.)
