Replacement Quietly Picked in Colorado
It looks like Denver Schools Chief Michael Bennet will get the nod to replace Ken Salazar in the United States Senate.
This dark horse pick surely surprises Bennet’s boss, the Denver Mayor, who had hoped for the nod himself. But the really notable thing here is that Mr. Bennet (D-CO) will be the youngest member of the current Senate, just edging out Senator Pryor (D-AR) and Senator-Elect Begich (D-AK) for the honor.
A rising generation of young senators, indeed.
It’s also a stark contrast to the legal chaos shaping up in Illinois, and the farce of a pseudo-campaign for the nod going on in New York. Only replacement process that was quieter had to be Delaware, which itself had questions of dynasty to it (as the replacement is a caretaker, allowing Senator Biden’s son to run for the seat in 2010).
Bennet’s an unconventional pick, but from what I’ve read of him, he has a solid record of accomplishment as the head of the Denver school system, so he might end up being a good pick.
