Bonus Points for Consistency
If nothing else, Bush earns some bonus points for being consistent in regards to extra-legal authority on detainees. The New York Times reported today that Bush attacked 3 GOP rebels who were seeking to modify a bill on detainee handling who were seeking to limit his authority and keep the practice in line with constitutional history.
He said “Were it not for this program,” [his extra-legal program for holding prisoners indefinitely and possibly subjecting them to toture], “our intelligence community believes that Al Qaeda and its allies would have succeeded in launching another attack against the American homeland.” Opponents, in other words, were putting America at risk.
Sound familiar? It’s a key theme in most Republican campaigns against Democrats these days. It’s interesting that Bush uses the same rhetoric on those Republicans who disagree with him. It suggests he stubbornly believes in his way of doing things and no other way is feasible.
But at least he’s consistent in demonizing his opponents as “appeasers” of terrorists.
