Sweet (Work) Alabama
So, my employer is sending me to a layoff meeting next week in Bessemer, Alabama. Over 480 coal miners are being laid-off just as the current contract with the United Mine Workers of America comes to an end.
My job will be to help the miners with applications, knowing how many years of service they have, etc.
4 meetings on Dec 13-14, plus travel days on the 12th and 15th to get there.
Should be “fun”. It’s my first business trip of any kind, and layoff meetings where you meet the coal miners you serve each day is an important, eye-opening experience.
And no, I’m not taking a detour down to Florida, although I probably could.
Mr. Kerns, Hey i just wanted to say that i read your blogs and today i was typing in “umwa bessemer, Al” well need i say more i got linked to your web page. My husband was one of those laid-off miners sinceSept.2 2006, and I’m praying everyday that he gets called back soon.PinnOak is the mines. I wish you would put fire under whoever needs to be. It’s been a long haul for my family. So… if you could pull a few strings… haha. sincerely pam
