Freebies or Annoyances?
During my daily commute, I get on the subway at Pentagon City. But to get there, I have to use escalators to get down to the station. And each morning, representatives of two free publications stand right there in such a way as to practically block your path unless you take their free handouts.
I don’t mind people offering the paper, even though you can just as easily take it from one of the free-standing stacks like any other free paper. What I do mind is they blocking our path to the escalator just to give away a paper 80% of us throw away once we’re at the bottom of the escalator.
“Whenever I walk, people try to hand me out flyers. And when someone tries to hand me out a flyer, it’s kinda like they’re saying, “Here, YOU throw this away.””
-Mitch Hedberg, RIP
It also kinda reminds me of SG campaigning in Turlington Plaza. But at least then you have options for avoiding it. In my case, the two people handing stuff out literally forced us into a single-file line and we had to squeeze past them to get to the escalator. Quite annoying.
But good quote.
